.Oliver Gillie, in Memorandum

This website was established over a decade ago in collaboration with Oliver Gillie, one of the first and strongest advocates of Vitamin D. Oliver sadly passed away May 2021 at the age of 83. Gillie held a doctorate in genetics from Edinburgh University before embarking on his medical journalistic career that lasted over more than 40 years. Early on his career he became fascinated with the role and Vitamin D and the consequences of deficiency. He was responsible for describing the “Scottish Effect” arguing that many of the health problems in Scotland were a result of the constant cloud cover which prevents the production of Vitamin D. Today, thanks largely to Gillie’s work, the Scottish government recommends that everyone, including children, should take Vitamin D supplements, especially during the low-sunlight months from October to March. In 2914 he was awarded The Medical Journalists Associations Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to health journalism, including his efforts to promote awareness about vitamin D3. We are glad to continue the work that he was so pivotal in starting.
